Transport Planning (Traffic Signal Engineering) Apprentice

As an apprentice, you’ll work at a company and get hands-on experience. You’ll gain new skills and work alongside experienced staff.

What you’ll do at work
  • Completing the Transport Planning Technician apprenticeship programme.
  • Attending three-month rotations within local authority organisations to gain the relevant experience and knowledge in Urban Traffic Control, Network Control Centres, Operations, Maintenance and Design for Traffic Signals.
  • Developing your transport planning knowledge to gain an understanding of transport in the West Midlands.
  • Addressing a skills shortage area in transport across the West Midlands
Role responsibilities include:
  • Assist in the planning, design, implementation or assessment of transport planning and traffic signal solutions. Contribute to the modelling of transport and traffic systems.
  • Collect, interpret, and analyse inter-related and often dynamic technical information and data to inform the development of policies, plans, or projects.
  • Participate in community, stakeholder engagement and public consultations.
  • Use the quality management and assurance systems available to proactively plan and manage tasks which contribute to the delivery of larger programmes of work.
  • Undertake the maintenance of asset management databases, ensuring all relevant information is captured and missing data is identified.
  • Undertake monitoring of the traffic signal network and where necessary, make interventions to improve traffic flow and ease congestion.
  • Carry out as and when necessary, site observation and traffic movement inspections, some of which will be outside normal office hours. This will include site visits working outdoors and working alongside live roads.
  • Keep up to date with advances in traffic technology and innovation opportunities.
  • Support the operation of Urban Traffic Control systems as and when such systems are operated from the RTCC.
  • Provide traffic signal design and review input to support the development of highway schemes.
  • Provide traffic signal/network management operations support to the Regional Transport Coordination Centre (RTCC) and KRN (Key Route Network) teams for real time operations and special events.
  • Engage with Local Authority and National Highways traffic signal and Urban Traffic Control teams to deliver collaborative working and common operational objectives.
  • Represent Transport for West Midlands (TfWM) at factory acceptance testing, pre-commissioning and full site acceptance testing of traffic signal installations, including verifying the operation of all associated equipment and methods of control.
Essential qualifications

Training. 
An apprenticeship includes regular training with a college or other training organisation. At least 20% of your working hours will be spent training or studying.

Your training course
Transport planning technician (level 3).

Your training plan
The apprenticeship training will be delivered by Leeds College of Building, with residential block release for one week at the start of each semester. You will therefore be required to be away from home for short periods of time. 

When you're not studying, you will spend 4 days per week in the West Midlands, working at the West Midlands Combined Authority and on rotation with some of our partners. 

Hours    
Monday to Thursday, 9.00am to 5.00pm (office or network-based) with Friday as the apprenticeship study day (home-based). There may be some evening or weekend work.
